    Nihilism and Existentialism
Grendel was a pessimist, and very selfish. This was made evident when he stated, "I understood that the world was nothing: a mechanical chaos of casual, brute enmity on which we stupidly impose our hopes and fears. I understood that, finally and absolutely, I alone exist." (Grendel 10-11). When he said this it showed that he believed there was no greater being, and did not show any care for anyones feelings. He did not even acknowledge that people were human, or that there was such things as right and wrong.

    Nihilism and Existentialism
In Grendel he expresses Nihilism quality in how he views the world. He believes that all humans are evil and have no incentive for things that they do. Grendel does not love anyone he feels no sympathy for other creatures and beings. He let the bird die on the ground and kills innocent people inside of herot. He does not have a healthy relationship with his mother and has no companion. He can not communicate with his mother but she is the only person in his life that he trusts and loves. Grendel is missing some major relationships in his life, he is missing a father figure and has a bad relationship with his mother. He has no true friends and everyone or thing that he encounters he has a bad experience with. Grendel even comes to believe that he is the only person in the world that matters he is quoted "I understand that, finally and absolutely, I alone exist"(22). This proves Grendel's nihilistic views.

    Nihilism and Existentialism
In Grendel, Grendel falls under the nihilist category. A nihilistic philosophy is the belief that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated. When I was researching the word it said that a nihilist is someone who believes in nothing other than, perhaps the purpose to destroy. While they squeal and screech and bump into each other, I silently sack up my dead and withdraw to the woods (Gardener 12). Grendel acts like a monster because he destroys innocent people and that is how those people see him. Grendel should be classified as a nihilist because he doesn’t think of anything and doesn’t really think that much matters in life.

    Nihilism and Existentialism
Nihilism is the philosophical doctrine suggesting the negation of one or more meaningful aspects of life. Grendel is more of a nihilism because he lives in the wild and is observant of the world around him, he also is frightened by humans more than animals. Like when the humans attacked him for being in the tree rather when the bull attacked he just moved out of the way when it head was down.

    Nihilism and Existentialism
In my opinion, I think Grendel is more nihilistic rather than existentialist at first. In the beginning, Grendel is more nihilistic because of the fact that he never has seen a human before, and not knowing the existence of the world around him. But then as the story continues and Grendel continues to see the world, especially humans in particular, he begins to see the existence of terror and hatred towards him because of his appearance. Because of this hatred, Grendel starts to get more angry towards everything and everyone, making him more existentialistic by this point in the novel.

    Nihilism and Existentialism
Grendel demonstrates his Existentialism point of view many times through out the novel. He expresses his opinion how ever and when ever he wants. Also he kills various animals showing his hostile personality quite well. Growing up his family never did anything but oppress him, so no one ever has an influence on what he does. He does however have to deal with the consequences of his actions. For instance Grendel states, "the red sun blinds me, churns up my belly to nausca, and the heat thrown out of the bone-fire burns my skin. I cringe, clawing my flesh and flee for home." This quote shows Grendel suffering from the song and the sun of the town. He has caused them to sing and caused his own suffering

    Nihilism and Existentialism
I must agree with Derek "I create my own post" Bowman, saying that Grendel is more of a nihilism. He seems to not care about a moral code, instead destroying why world around him each day of his life. When Grendel kills man, this hows that he has no moral code and does not care about what he does.

    Nihilism and Existentialism
In my opinion, Grendel shows examples of both nihilism and existentialism. Nihilism is a viewpoint that traditional values and beliefs are unfounded and that existence is senseless and useless. In the story, he is selfish and careless about everything, but his mother. He is mostly alone and is concerned with hurting people. He believes life is pointless and has no manners or principles. On the other hand, existentialism, a philosophical movement that emphasizes on individual existence, freedom, and choice, is also apparent in Grendel by how he discovers himself throughout the story. "Not, of course, that I fool myself with thoughts that I'm more noble. Pointless, ridiculous monster crouched in the shadow, stinking of dead men, murdered children, martyred cows"(6). This quote shows who he truly is. He does make his own decisions and choices freely and even though, he does not have any support from his mother and is friendless, he has accepted it and shows little emotions on how it affects him. When the bull attacks him he had little reaction and did not feel the bull posed as a real threat to him. Overall, I think nihilism and existentialism is clear so far in Grendel.
